Aquanatural Anti-Fouling Paint

A treated panel coated in Aquanatural anti-fouling paint was attached to a trash rack and submerged for a period of 8 months. On this panel, the perimeter of the panel was treated while the center square was not treated. Hence, the mussels attached to the center square and not to the outside perimeter.

The major concern is the blockage of water lines designed to cool the hydropower turbines at dams like Hoover. This problem has already caused a “significant increase in the frequency of high temperature alarms in cooling systems, requiring shutdowns” so that the mussels could be removed.

Rapidly Increasing Demand

Zebra and quagga mussels have been identified in 23 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. A recent study in the Western U.S. showed the mussels in 33 bodies of water across Nevada, Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah. With warmer year-round temperatures than bodies of water in the Great Lakes, these mussels are able to reproduce six times a year instead of two.

Anti-Fouling Results

The picture displays the degree of bio-fouling between two anti fouling treated areas of netting material used in the construction of open net pens. Aquaculture Natural anti-fouling paint was applied using an asphalt brush to the netting material. The degree of fouling between the two areas was significant.
